Witnessing Belonging
If you’re new here, welcome. I’m glad you found your way.
This Substack is a space for witnessing—to lives lived in complexity, to healing that unfolds over time, and to the deep human need to matter and belong.
I write from my lived experience as:
a daughter witnessing her mother’s life and legacy
a woman approaching her 70s, still becoming
an educator and mentor to teachers, writers, and refugee leaders
a witness to moments of joy, rupture, grief, resilience, and care
This is not a place for easy answers or tidy conclusions.
It is a place for:
stories that hold contradiction
reflections on healing that isn’t linear
questions about agency, identity, and belonging
honoring voices that are often unseen or unheard
What You’ll Find Here
Each week, I write about how healing, mattering, and belonging show up in real life.
You’ll encounter:
reflections drawn from my mother’s biography-in-progress
moments from my own memoir writing
insights from mentoring and community-building work
stories of resilience from refugee-led initiatives
observations about aging, caregiving, creativity, and voice
witnessing global and personal moments without turning away
Sometimes the posts are quiet and reflective.
Sometimes they are raw and immediate.
Always, they are written with care.
A Word About “Witnessing”
When I use the word witness, I don’t mean watching from a distance.
I mean:
staying present without fixing
listening without appropriating
speaking when silence would erase humanity
holding grief and gratitude at the same time
Witnessing is not passive.
It is an ethical choice.
If You’re Wondering Where to Begin
You can start anywhere. Truly.
But if it helps, you might begin with:
reflections on the Heroine’s Journey through my mother’s life
posts about belonging and mattering in times of loss or conflict
essays on mentorship, aging, and becoming visible again
Each post stands on its own, but together they form a larger conversation.
An Invitation
If something here resonates—
if you’ve ever wondered where you belong,
if you’re healing something old,
if you’re becoming someone new—
you’re welcome to stay.
You don’t need to agree with everything I write.
You don’t need to have it all figured out.
All you need is a willingness to witness—yourself and others—with honesty and care.
Thank you for being here.
